What you need is perspective

Issue 01 - November 2024

And CPD points. Those are always nice. But mostly perspective. As we grow up, we tend to find our niche. For many health workers, that means specialising in a particular field. But to prevent ourselves crystallising into our roles, it is necessary to – you guessed it – get perspective.

So here it is, the first issue of our revamped publication, now called Medical Academic Perspectives. The vision: to create a platform for clinicians to share their expertise through conversations, interviews and case studies.

In our maiden issue, we examine the plentiful reasons for positivity in the field of HIV care, courtesy of Prof Francois Venter and Netcare Garden City’s Dr Kay Mahomed. Allergy expert Dr Corli Lodder walks us through a case of paediatric allergic rhinitis, while Tuks' Dr Patrick Piotie examines the state of diabetes care, now that up to 4 million South Africans are estimated to suffer from the disease.

Child psychiatrist Dr Alicia Porter examines the issues faced by clinicians when prescribing drugs for childhood depression. This issue also has an ethics component, courtesy of Natasha Naidoo and Jason Berkowitz's in-depth article on a patient's right to refuse care, as well as Dr Marietjie Botes' look at the implications of AI in healthcare.

Click here to answer a quiz on the above and earn 3 general and 2 ethics CPD points!

Till next time!
