Disruptions may be caused by for example pregnancy, menses, contraceptives, diet, and the use of some female hygiene products. These disruptions interfere with the protective effects of Lactobacillus spp, a gram-positive bacteria, and can result in an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome (dysbiosis), which predispose women to infection.

Bacterial vaginosis, aerobic vaginitis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and the sexually transmitted infection, trichomoniasis, are the most common vaginal discharge syndromes.

In this CPD-accredited article, we explore the efficacy of antibiotics and antiseptics in the treatment of these four vaginal discharge syndromes.
