Does testosterone therapy increase CV risk?
Testosterone therapy is widely prescribed for older men experiencing symptoms of hypogonadism, despite lacking robust data on cardiovascular (CV) safety. The American Food and Drug Administration mandated a trial to assess this risk due to sparse and inconclusive evidence. In this short video, Prof Michael Lincoff, Vice Chairman of the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of CV Medicine and an interventional cardiologist in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic, gives a short overview of the key findings of the trial entitled A Study to Evaluate the Effect of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) on the Incidence of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) and Efficacy Measures in Hypogonadal Men (TRAVERSE). TRAVERSE was the largest testosterone trial, focused on high-risk patients with stringent criteria for hypogonadism, and meticulously tracked CV endpoints.
