Our conference, themed “Hearts, Minds and Where we come from”, will feature insightful contributions from Medical Genetics, Cardiology and Neurodevelopment.
Workshops will be on cardiac point of care ultrasound for the NICU, PICU and Emergency Department and in Neurodevelopment, helping children, and their families, with challenging behaviour.
As the landscapes of care and the profile of children’s health have evolved in these disciplines, our experts will include what you need to know about genetic testing and treatments, autism diagnosis and family care, medication for developmental conditions, a variety of exciting and interactive sessions on common paediatric heart disease and a view of some revolutionary developments available for your cardiac patients.
Workshops will be held at Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the main conference will be held in person at the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands from Wednesday where friends old and new can meet up, learn and share experiences.

About 150 years ago, a small medical audience in Massachusetts saw practical anaesthesia for the first time – and surgery would never be the same again. Possibly no medical discovery has proved more beneficial to humanity; not only from its elimination of immense suffering, but because surgery itself has accomplished more in this short interval than in all the preceding millennia.
Surgery impossible a generation ago is carried out routinely today. Safety is paramount, and ultimately, it is the anaesthetist’s own skills and knowledge that determines patient safety.

21st SASNM Biennial Congress

Nuclear medicine is recognised as an independent specialty with facilities in many South African hospitals and private facilities, and postgraduate training is offered at most South African tertiary academic institutions. The Critical Care Society of Southern Africa (CCSSA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to delivering appropriate, quality care to the critically ill.
Founded in 1977, the CCSSA represents doctors, nurses and allied health practitioners working in the field of critical care medicine. Affiliated societies, such as the South African Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SASPEN) and the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Physiotherapy Group (CPRG), as well as special interest groups, such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) are also represented and supported by the Society.
The CCSSA provides professional development; research; guidelines; protocols; accreditation; training; conferences and seminars to its members.

In the late nineteen seventies and early eighties vascular surgery progressively emerged as a distinct sub-speciality of general surgery. It became obvious that this emerging discipline required a subtle but real difference in approach and surgical skills, with specific requirements for training. For those interested in the emerging speciality, the formation of professional societies that would promote excellence in the development, teaching and practice of Vascular Surgery became progressively more attractive. Many had similar ideas in South Africa, despite reservations expressed by many of the senior academic surgeons in the Country. The visit of Andrew Nicolaides as the Michael and Janie Miller Professor to the Department of Surgery in Johannesburg in 1981 acted as an important stimulus to establish a vascular surgical society in South Africa.

Oculoplastic surgery includes a wide variety of surgical procedures that deal with the orbit (eye socket), eyelids, tear ducts and the face.
In the United States, United Kingdom and parts of Europe, oculoplastic surgeons are ophthalmologists who deal exclusively with these procedures. The South African Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons (SASOPS) was formed in 2006.
