Brenntag Beauty and Care expands its offering

As a leading global chemical distribution company, Brenntag has strengthened its position in the South African personal care and cosmetics industry through recent acquisitions. This growth provides the company’s local customers with even greater access to a wide range of actives and raw materials with the additional support of an innovative formulation lab.

According to Statista, despite the global recession, the beauty and personal care market worldwide is projected to generate a revenue of $646.20bn in 2024, with the personal care segment contributing the largest percentage of sales at $282.80bn. This is followed by skincare and fragrance.
Locally the picture looks much the same with an annual growth of 3.77% expected in the period 2024 to 2028.
“Taking these predictions into account, the timing is perfect for Brenntag to expand its footprint,” says Charis Lewis, business manager, Beauty and Care. “These are areas of expertise for us, and we are excited about the opportunities. Thanks to our excellent relationships with suppliers, the Beauty and Care division is well positioned to take advantage of industry’s projected growth.”
Expanded portfolio
Brenntag’s Beauty and Care division offers a comprehensive portfolio of high-quality ingredients with a particular focus on active ingredients, fragrances, colourants and pigments, emollients and emulsifiers, surfactants, preservatives and ‘green’ products. Yet thanks to the company’s global reach, the division can assist customers by sourcing specific ingredients and raw materials based on their exact needs.
Locally the Beauty and Care division will also incorporate home care and industrial cleaning.
Home care products include a wide range of consumer goods that are used for household cleaning and maintenance purposes, for example laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, surface cleaners, air fresheners, bathroom cleaners etc.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the status of household and home care products has been elevated, not only due to the heightened awareness of hygiene, but also because of the experience of being confined to their homes. This has driven consumers to enhance their home cleaning regimes by using products that incorporate multifunctional ingredients, which combine premium performance and appeal to the senses.
“Through our supplier network we have access to some of the most innovative home care and cleaning ingredients. Our partners are all leaders in their respective areas, which means that the local industry will be able to keep up with current trends,” Charis explains.
Formulation laboratories
One of Brenntag’s strengths, which it hopes to continue building on in the local market is its ability to work with and support customers with everything they need from idea to execution. This includes technical feasibility studies, regulatory support and formulation expertise right through to reliable ingredient supply.
The company has Personal Care Innovation & Application Centres at various sites across the globe, including South Africa. These centres include formulation and application laboratories, which provide product development assistance to customers, designing formulations using Brenntag’s extensive portfolio of high-quality ingredients. The application lab can also mix and fill small quantities of sample products for further evaluation and stability testing.
“Not all companies are able to provide this kind of technical support,” says Charis, adding that it is a unique selling point for Brenntag and one which differentiates the business from its competitors.

Local market needs
South Africa is a highly entrepreneurial market and many players in the personal care and beauty industry are small and medium enterprises. To support these businesses, Brenntag offers smaller pack sizes of ingredients, making it more affordable for small business owners to get access to quality raw materials and actives.

Sustainability matters
One of the biggest changes in the cosmetics and personal care industries is the demand for responsibly and sustainably sourced ingredients. Demand is not only centred on sourcing but also processing and distribution.
The Brenntag Group recently achieved Platinum status in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment, while sustainability is one of the core drivers of the company’s Beauty and Care Division. This driver encompasses everything from inclusive formulation concepts to increasing customer access to sustainable and ethical alternatives.
“We are committed to ingredient transparency and are sensitive to the increasingly popular ‘clean beauty’ trend, with many of our suppliers’ offering products that tick this box,” adds Charis.
